Charles Bukowski. The First 100

This year the American poet and writer Charles Bukowski celebrates his 100 year anniversary. In 1976, Ulvis Alberts photographed Charles Bukowski at home in his East Hollywood apartment. One of the images from this session grew popular with the public.

And to honor the famous writer, Alberts is releasing a museum quality poster of 100 only copies, twenty signed by the photographer and the others stamped with his archival seal.

Blues Legend B.B. King died in Las Vegas
He was 89

The Long Beach Blues Festival (in California) was a week-end outdoor event
that I photographed in 1984 and 1985. I'd bring my lawn-chair, a bottleof wine and cameras. I'd get as close to the stage as possible to photograph some of the best blues stars of that era that included John Lee Hooker,Etta James, and the great B.B. King.
I always thought that this might be the last time I heard and saw these musicians,
so I shot lots of film.
B.B. King influenced Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. He played 200-300 concerts a year for decades. He won 15 Grammy Awards. His music crossed over to white audiences in the mid-1960's and his 1969 "The Thrill s Gone" - on love and loss- is pretty much remembered by everyone.

Tarzan Celebrates 100 Year Anniversary.
Authored by Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), Tarzan first first book publication was in 1914, and then in twenty-five sequels, three authorized books by other authors, and innumerable works in other media, authorized and not. There have also been dozens of movie versions featuring Tarzan as well as radio shows, TV series, and comic books.
The University of Louisville holds the largest institutional collection of Tarzan materials (The Edgar Rice Burroughs Memorial Collection) except this unique photo.

There are classic and legendary photographs of such poker stars as Doyle Brunson, “Chip”Reese, Bobby Baldwin, Stu Ungar, “Amarillo Slim” Preston, Johnny Moss, "Sailor" Roberts and others.

ICON FILMS ( U.K.) has purchased Ulvis Alberts photographs of the legendary poker player “Amarillo Slim”Preston at the W.S.O.P for an upcoming documentary.

Ulvis Alberts' photographed Liberace at his Hollywood home in 1973. This photograph can be seen in Ulvis Alberts book "Camera as Passport" and is available as a signed fine art print from the Birkenfelds gallery.

The Steven Soderbergh's film premiere of Behind the Candelabra, starring Michael Douglas as flamboyant pianist Liberace, was seen by 2.4 million people in the US. The film is released in UK cinemas on 7 June 2013.
Based on Scott Thorson's memoir Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace, it charts the life of the American pianist and the secret affair he had with the author, played by Matt Damon. The drama received its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month. Read more...

Tina Hendrix, daughter of Leon Hendrix, the brother of Jimi Hendrix,organized her 2nd, annual music festival in Seattle on 18 September 2011.

About 15 musicians were featured at the event including Jimi impersonator
and singer/guitarist, Randy Hansen. The outdoor festival also included
Leon Hendrix and a number of music students from the school.
Ulvis Alberts donated several of his books ("Camera as Passport" 1966-2008)
and an original photograph of Jimi Hendrix backstage (Seattle 1968)
to Tina's school. Paul Allen's Experience Music Project has
the now classic Hendrix photographs on display at the Seattle center museum.

ONE OF A KIND

Boogaloo Publishing published the book "One of a kind" (authors Nolan Dalla and Peter Alson) of the legendary Stu Ungar. On the cover is a photograph of the legendary player Stu Ungar "The Kid"

"This 1980 photograph of Stu "the Kid" Ungar is one of my favorites. It reminds me of a kid who should be in church rather than at a poker table. Stu won that year the WSOP at Binion's Horseshoe Casino. There were only 73 players. He won again in 1981 with 75 players at the tables. And a third time in 1997 against 312 players. And this photograph, of a zen-like "Stuie," will be the one we remember of the boy genius. "

"Ulvis Alberts,photographer sold his black and white poker photographs from the late 1970's to season 7 of the television broadcast of HIGH STAKES POKER (2011).
This series of 13 one hour episodes shows a "montage" of Alberts photographs in one minute segments on each show under POKER LEGENDS. Such players as Doyle Brunson, Stu Ungar,"Sailor" Roberts,Jack "Treetop" Straus and Betty Carey, the first high stakes woman player are featured.
HIGH STAKES POKER is filmed at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas and broadcast on the GAMES Channel in the US and Canada. The draw of viewers to the show is cash bets in the hundreds of thousands by "old school" pros "heads up" with up and coming poker players from on-line, internet poker. Photographer,Ulvis Alberts (Birkenfelds gallery/Riga) is participating in a campaign for breast cancer rehabilitation, organized by SAMSUNG in the Baltic States of Estonia,Latvia and Lithuania. SAMSUNG a leader
in electronics manufacturing is working with "Dzivibas koks" ("The tree of life") organization in Latvia.
Everyone can support breast cancer rehabilitation as Ulvis Alberts is among several artists whose photographs can be downloaded to a cell phone or a computer for as little as 1 Euro at www.ribbon.lv ("Lejupielade ekrantapetes"). The campaign will continue till 25 February 2011.

New Project - PHOTOICON

The "Golden Apple" awards 2009 awarded first prize to Ulvis Alberts' photography book "Camera As Passport"(1966-2008). The selection was made from 58 fine art books and calendars from 23 publishers in Latvia.

The award was given on 14 April 2010, at a ceremony held in the "small guild" of the Latvian Academy of Science in Riga, by the "Book Publishers Association" who recognized the best art books published the previous year.
Contributors to "Camera As Passport" were Janis Pavloskis, computer artist; "Preses nams" printing house; and the"Poligrafijas infocentrs."
In May, 2010 nominated books will participate in a Baltic States art competition and later will be exhibited and sold in Germany at the Frankfurt and Leipcigas book faires. Back to the book...

Photographer, Antanas Sutkus made it easy for me to photograph him at his home in Vilnius,Lithuania. I asked him to lay down on his couch with a large Antanas' photograph of the writer, Jean-Paul Sartre, on the wall.
"Now Antanas," I asked, "close your eyes." I took several frames on my old, motorized Nikon. "Now open your eyes." Click,click....
"Thank you," I finally said. "That was great!"

And in December 2009, just before Christmas, those were the best photographs I took all year.
